The pre-snap stance when facing a defender who is right on top of you. Get into position, hold for ten seconds, go on the signal, and repeat. Nothing else: this is the stance you’re establishing, not the release.
Key points
- Weight split half and half: if one foot is loaded, he reads your release side.
- Stand on the balls of your feet, with your feet staggered; never have one foot off the ground before the snap.
- Hands high in front of your chest, ready to go, not hanging limply at your sides.
Common mistakes
- Loading the front foot as in a normal stance: good for going straight, not for keeping both sides open.
- Making a false step on the signal, which costs the half-yard that decides the battle.
