A lateral slide step that gets off the line of his hands without ever backing up, then straight back up toward depth. Your body shifts; it never takes a step back.
Key points
- The foot glides along the ground; it doesn’t jump: a jump gives the opponent time to catch up.
- Keep your shoulders facing deep field during the slide.
- Head back upfield from the second step; otherwise the slide turns into a sideways drift.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Stepping back half a step to make space, which hands over the yard you were trying to gain.
- Sliding too wide and ending up outside your route lane.
