Eat Up Space

Cones (recommended)

Close the gap before initiating the release. One cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) at one yard, another at three: reach the first cone in two steps, then break away. The imaginary defender no longer has time to back up.

Key points

  • The first two steps eat up the space; they aren’t looking for a side yet.
  • Keep your torso low: standing up alerts the defender that you’re about to break free.
  • Add a slow walk before the start to work on changing the pace.
  • In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.

Common mistakes

  • Starting the release from your starting spot, giving him two free yards to back off.
  • Charging straight ahead with no release plan and getting swallowed up.
