A short pass caught while standing still or nearly so, behind the line, followed by an immediate burst of speed. The catch is just a stepping stone between two runs, and everything hinges on what you do in the second that follows.

Key points

  • Hands go up before the ball is released: the pass is quick and short.
  • The first step after catching the ball is already directed forward.
  • Three sets of twenty-five seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the ball away before taking off costs half a second too long.
  • Backing up on the catch instead of attacking forward.
