Cones (recommended)

A cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) set on your outside shoulder stands for a defender in outside shade. Your aiming point is one to two yards past the cone, not the cone. Attack there, then release back inside on your third step. Six starts.

Key points

  • Aiming past him is what forces him to open up; aiming at him doesn't bother him.
  • The third step decides everything: that’s where the inside release starts.
  • Keep your shoulders down on the first two steps; otherwise, the break will be predictable.
  • In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.

Common mistakes

  • Aiming at the cone: you hand him the contact without him even having to move.
  • Releasing inside before he has opened his hips, so in the direction he’s moving.
