Two cones (or other markers: bottles, bags) spaced one yard apart represent a defender retreating in a mirrored pattern. Three speeds over the first five yards: slow, slow, full speed. Six starts, varying the timing of the acceleration.

Key points
- Against a soft press, a change of speed is your only weapon: there’s nothing to grab.
- The slow-down has to be real; otherwise he doesn’t bite and you just ran slower.
- Vary the timing of your acceleration on each start; never accelerate at the same yard.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Going all out from the first step: that’s exactly the cue he’s waiting for to open.
- Working your hands against someone who isn’t touching you.
