The receiver keeps his arms at his sides and extends his hands only at the very last moment, when the ball is one meter away. On the field, extending your hands too early signals the ball’s arrival to the defender, who then only has to use his arms to make the play. Practice this while running, and not just facing forward: also from a three-quarter angle and with your back to the quarterback, because that’s when the movement is hardest to execute.
Key points
- Your hands come out when the ball is one meter away, never before.
- Keep your eyes on the ball until it’s in your hands.
- Fifteen catches: five facing the quarterback, five at three-quarters, and five while running with your back to the quarterback.
Common mistakes
- Bringing your hands out by reflex as soon as the ball is thrown.
- Compensating by pulling your head back.
- Working only facing the passer, where the move is easy.
