A deep forward lunge, the elbow dropping toward the ground inside the front foot, then the chest opening toward the sky. It opens the hip, the hip flexors and the spine in a single movement, hence its name.
Key points
- Keep your back knee off the ground: it’s the muscle that holds the position, not the ground.
- The reach extends to the end of the arm, with your gaze following your hand.
- Stick to the number of repetitions specified in your workout: this is mobility training, not stretching.
Common mistakes
- Putting your back knee down and resting on it.
- Holding a position: If you hold a position for more than 45 to 60 seconds per muscle before exercise, you will lose strength for 10 to 20 minutes.
