Controlled articular rotation of the hip: the knee rises, moves out to the side, drops behind, and comes back. In each direction and with each leg, at the speed of a clock hand. The hip decides what a 90-degree break is worth.
Key points
- Your pelvis doesn’t move. As soon as it follows the leg, you’ve gone past your real range of motion: back off.
- Slow. One rotation takes seven seconds, not two.
- Leaning against the wall helps, but it’s not required.
Common mistakes
- Going fast: you gain apparent range and zero control.
- Letting the trunk compensate, which gives a nice rotation of the back and none of the hip.
