A planted pole (a goalpost, a tree, a stake, or failing that a standing bag) stands in for the defender right on top of you. You line up facing it and work four jab variations, three releases each: the single jab, the front-foot jab, the double jab, then the triple jab in a tight space. Each time you come out by passing the pole as close as possible, shoulder first, without giving it your chest, and your hands push the pole aside or pin it the way you would an arm trying to grab you. Twelve releases.

Key points

  • The jab shifts his weight, it doesn’t shift you.
  • You pass the pole as close as possible.
  • Never give him your chest.

Common mistakes

  • Jabs that go backward instead of staying on the line.
  • Going around the pole in an arc.
