Blocking bag or shield

Your partner holds a shield on the outside and pushes toward the sideline. You pin his outside arm and break away toward the inside. Six reps, then switch roles.

Key points

  • The hand that pins the opponent should grab above the elbow, never at the wrist: if you grab at the wrist, the opponent can break free with a shoulder roll.
  • The inside shoulder leads the way; the rest of the body follows.
  • Go through the push, forward: backing off gives him exactly the time he wants.

Common mistakes

  • Pinning with both hands, which blocks your own release as much as his.
  • Getting free by drifting wide: you end up on the sideline, which does his work for him.
