Press Release vs Shield

- Blocking bag or shield
A partner holds a shield bag at chest height and pushes from the start: if a shield isn’t available, any contact bag will do, held with both hands. Break out of contact using three steps, first to one side and then to the other. The bag allows you to apply real pressure without anyone taking a hit.
Key points
- Your first step gets off his line; it doesn’t wait for the push.
- The hands should make contact with the shield before it touches the chest.
- Six starts per side; the partner varies the intensity of the push.
Common mistakes
- Backing away from the push instead of going through it.
- Settling for a loosely held shield: without real pressure, the drill is useless.
