Two partners, each holding a shield, stand facing the blocker, spaced apart from one another. At the starting signal, one of the two moves toward the blocker while the other moves backward, without revealing which one. The one moving forward is the one threatening the run: that’s the one you have to go after, and this is decided while running, not while standing still.
Key points
- It is the direction of movement that determines the target, not the distance: whoever is moving forward poses a threat; whoever breaks away no longer does.
- Decisions are made on the fly: slowing down to look costs the time that reading was supposed to save.
- Once you’ve picked your target, stick to it: switching midway costs you the two braking steps.
- Six repetitions; partners take turns moving forward and backward.
Common mistakes
- Going to the closest partner instead of the one moving forward.
- Hesitating on the run, which loses the time the choice was supposed to gain.
