- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
Six yards full speed to the cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag), then the hard stop of the hitch: your weight sinks onto the second inside step, your outside foot slaps the ground and stops you facing the passer. Twelve stops, alternating sides.

Key points
- Your hips drop before your foot lands: it’s your pelvis that brakes, not your heel. If you stop with your chest upright, you plant a heel in front of you and fall back.
- Bend the knee on the last step, keeping your shoulders in front of your hips.
- No drifting after the stop: you stop right where you planted your feet.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Slowing down over the two yards before, which tells the defender you’re about to stop.
- Stopping on three or four steps instead of two.
