Box Drill

- Players
- 2 minimum
- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
Four cones (or other markers: bottles, bags) in a square, a defender inside, and you choose the route based on what he takes away. You start without knowing where you’re going: if he closes the inside, you go outside; if he opens his hips early, you cut behind him. It’s the first drill in the theme where he, not the cone, decides. Ten reps.
Key points
- Go without a plan: if you decided beforehand, you’re not reading anything.
- The defender plays normally; he does not fake a reaction.
- Say out loud what you read after each rep, to check it with him.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Choosing your route at the start and running it no matter what.
- A defender who always gives the same side, which kills the read.
