Two short routes from the same stem, to learn not to give the break away. The six-yard hitch: you push vertically, plant on the second inside step and come back facing the passer. The square break: the same push, torso low, then a sudden change of speed and a square break toward the sideline. Both start like a fade: the defender must not know which of the two you are running. Alternate the hitch and the square break, ten reps in total.

Key points
- Everything is a fade until it isn’t: the stem is identical on both routes.
- Keep your torso low during the push, otherwise the break can be seen coming.
- The break is sudden: a change of speed, not a gradual braking.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Slowing down three steps before the break.
- Running the stem differently depending on the route you are about to run.
