Blocking bag or shield

Blocking an interior defender who isn’t holding his position: The partner holds a shield and moves freely along the running lane; the blocker approaches from the side, closes the gap, and dislodges the defender. There is no warning before the contact; it happens as soon as the gap is closed, and the block is held until the partner signals to stop.

Key points

  • The strike doesn’t go on any outside signal: it’s up to the blocker to feel that the distance is closed.
  • Stay low from start to finish. Standing up as you move forward causes you to lose your base, and the block along with it.
  • The block isn't over upon contact; it's over when your partner signals to stop.
  • Six repetitions; switch roles every two.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving high with straight legs, which gives the defender the first move.
  • Letting go right after contact, while the run is still coming through behind.
