Get into the blocking stance and hold it: wide base, knees bent as at the start of a hang clean, hands high. Then move toward an imaginary defender in small fifteen-centimeter steps, without ever standing up, and stop dead for two seconds. It’s the basic drill for blocking in space, and it requires nothing at all.
Key points
- Stand with your feet wide apart, knees bent, and your weight on the balls of your feet.
- Take many short steps: it’s the frequency that gives you control, not the length.
- Keep your hands up and ready, never at your sides.
- Three sets of ten reps.
Common mistakes
- Standing up as you move forward, which gives the defender the first move.
- Taking big steps, and so arriving off balance just as he moves.
