Short, high pass: Move forward to catch it instead of letting it come to you. Take a step forward before reaching with your hands. Keep your hands in front of your body, never pressed against your chest, and keep your eyes on the ball during the catch and for a second afterward: lifting your head too soon is what causes you to drop a ball you’ve already caught.

Key points

  • Take a clear step toward the ball before your hands go out.
  • Keep your hands in front of your body, away from your torso.
  • Keep your eyes on the ball until it is tucked under your arm.
  • Three sets of eight.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the ball while taking a step back.
  • Lifting your head toward the rest of the play before the catch is finished.
