Tempo Whip & Return

- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
A progression in three steps, as in the video. One: footwork, on the spot or in small movements, until it is clean. Two: the tempo whip, run at medium speed while holding the rhythm of the footwork rather than the speed. Three: the return (“stick return”): you plant and come back along the line you came from. Put a few cones or flat markers on the ground to mark the turns (the video uses them). Three reps of each step, in order.
Key points
- Tempo first, speed second: you only speed up once the footwork is clean.
- In the whip, you come out hard from the first break, then reverse on a single step.
- The return is planted: it doesn’t round off.
Common mistakes
- Going full speed before the footwork is clean.
- Letting your eyes give away the direction before the reversal.
