- Cones (recommended)
A quick out over five yards, with a jab at the start. Place a cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) five yards in front of you, slightly to the outside. At the start, throw a hard jab, short and violent, as if to move a defender who is right on top of you. Then accelerate at full speed to the cone. There you plant the foot opposite to your exit, your hips sink, and you break out at 90 degrees toward the sideline, flat, without coming back up. Six reps per side. The video warms the feet up in a ladder before the start: ten seconds of fast feet on the spot do just as well.
Key points
- The jab is short and violent: it moves the defender, it doesn’t make you lose your line.
- You attack the cone at full speed, without slowing down before you plant.
- At five yards, two steps are enough to stop: don’t add any.
- Square exit, flat, toward the sideline: you don’t come back up toward the defender.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- A jab that is too wide, which costs a beat and pulls you off your line.
- Rounding off the exit: a rounded quick out gets undercut.
