Slant Push Step
- Prescription
- 8 × breaks / side · 20 s restabout 7 min
- Players
- Solo
- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
The slant, worked on the only step that matters, the third. Place a cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) three yards in front of you. You head toward it in two push steps, shoulders low, as if you were running a vertical. The third step plants your outside foot and sends you off at 45 degrees to the inside: it pushes, it doesn’t brake. Do one rep where you deliberately brake on that third step, then one correct rep, and compare: on the good one, the next step covers as much ground as the first ones. Eight reps per side.

Key points
- The third step pushes: it launches you into the route, it doesn’t stop you.
- Keep your shoulders low on the first two steps: you’re selling a vertical.
- Alternate a failed rep, where you brake, with a correct one: the difference shows in the next step, which should cover ground.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Braking on the third step as on a square cut: the slant dies on the spot.
- Standing up before the break, which gives the route away.
