In one-on-one drills, your partner plays for real and tries to break free by any legal means. Do one repetition, then switch roles immediately. This is the only drill where your opponent is allowed to win, and that’s why it’s the most effective for learning.
Key points
- Roles rotate with each repetition: whoever just got held knows what to try next.
- Count the repetitions won and lost out loud. Without keeping track, everyone remembers only what suits them.
- Ten drills, five in each role.
Common mistakes
- Letting the player win out of politeness, which defeats the entire purpose of the exercise.
- Grabbing when you’re losing: in a game, it’s a guaranteed penalty.
