- Cones
Three cones arranged in an L-shape, spaced five yards apart. Run back and forth to the first cone, then make a tight turn around the other two to form a figure-eight. This is the benchmark test for changes of direction, and the only exercise in the repertoire that focuses on tight turns around an obstacle rather than sharp changes of direction.
Key points
- To make a turn, lean inward with your shoulder down: do not slow down to turn.
- Use the same hand for the first two cone touches; otherwise, you'll waste time repositioning yourself.
- Six runs, three each way.
- Ninety seconds between each set: the effort lasts seven to eight seconds and is physically demanding.
Common mistakes
- Taking the turn upright, which forces an extra step to reposition.
- Stopping to touch the cone instead of touching it on the way past.
