Crossover Run

Ten yards of lateral crossover steps, then a hip opening and a ten-yard sprint. The crossover is the fast lateral movement: it covers more ground than the shuffle and lets you follow without turning your back, and it’s the opening that finishes it that counts.

Key points

  • On a crossover step, the leg goes in front, not behind: if it goes behind, you get stuck and can’t move forward again.
  • Keep your shoulders facing the area you need to cover throughout the lateral movement.
  • The opening comes from the hip, in a single step, never from a half-turn of the shoulders.
  • One minute between runs, three each way.

Common mistakes

  • Turning your shoulders before your hips, which costs a whole step.
  • Standing up during the crossover, which cuts the ground you cover.
