Run to twelve yards and break at a right angle in four counted steps. The first, the drop, sinks your hips toward the ground without slowing you down; it’s the only hard one. The next two turn you, and the fourth slaps the ground and sends you out flat, facing the passer. You keep the speed of a speed cut and come out square like on a square-in: that mix is what makes the move. Eight per direction.

Key points
- Four steps, never three: at this depth, three make you drift.
- The drop involves lowering the weight without breaking your stride: that’s where the real challenge lies.
- The line step is sharp and loud: it’s the passer’s signal.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Falling back into a classic square break by braking on the drop.
- Drifting two yards because you didn’t count four steps.
