- Cones (recommended)
Place a cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) twelve yards away. Run up to it at full speed, plant one foot, and break off at a 45-degree angle: inward for the Post route, outward for the Corner route. What you’re working on here is cutting without slowing down: the slant is cut at the same angle, but at a slower pace and from three yards out; at twelve yards and in motion, it all comes down to your ability to change direction without losing a tenth of a second. Eight reps per direction.

Key points
- No braking step: you plant and go, you don’t settle.
- On the corner, the inside feint involves a single, but decisive, step.
- Look at the safety before breaking: if he’s in the middle, the Post is closed.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Treating the angle cut at full speed like a slant and killing your speed.
- Opening wider than 45 degrees, which lengthens the ball’s flight.
