The wide receiver’s standing start on the line, the one you take on every snap: weight on the back foot, upper body leaning forward, first step short and under the body. Ten yards, without a defender or the ball, to focus solely on the initial break.
Key points
- Your weight is already on your front foot when you start running: do not lean back to get a running start.
- The first three strides are short and drive backward; they are not meant to cover distance.
- Gradually straighten your upper body over five to seven steps; never do it all at once.
- Ninety seconds between each: a start lasts three seconds, and it takes a minute and a half to be ready for the next one.
Common mistakes
- The false step backward before you go, which costs a tenth and warns the defender.
- Standing up from the second step, which kills the acceleration.
