Stand with your feet together and your body straight. Let yourself fall forward without bending, and don’t start moving until the very last possible moment. The fall naturally determines your body angle: this is the only starting drill where there’s nothing to remember.
Key points
- Wait as long as possible before making your first move: that’s when you’ll have the best angle.
- Keep your body straight as you fall; do not bend at the hips.
- Fifteen yards is enough. Beyond that, you learn nothing more about the start.
- Ninety seconds of recovery time between each set.
Common mistakes
- Going too early out of a safety reflex, which removes the whole point.
- Bending at the hips instead of falling as one piece.
