- Cones (recommended)
Only the last steps of a route, without the stem: start from the cone (or any other marker: bottle, bag) three steps from the top, throttle down and break. That’s where the route is won or lost, and it’s the part you rep the least because you spend your time running the fifteen yards before it. Do it when you have neither the space nor the legs for full routes. Three sets of eight.
Key points
- You reach the cone already moving: three run-up steps, not a standing start.
- Count clean breaks, not reps done.
- Stop the set as soon as your footwork breaks down, even at five.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Starting from a standstill, which removes the very speed you’re here to learn to throttle down.
- Lengthening the run-up until you’re running the whole route again.
