Release to Breakpoint
- Prescription

- Players

- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
The whole route in one rep, from the first step to the top: you get out of press against a bag on the ground, hold your line all the way up the stem, and reach the break ready to break. It’s the only drill in the set that puts the three pieces end to end, and it’s where you find out that a successful release can still reach the top out of breath. Eight reps, four to each side.
Key points
- The route path remains straight between the release point and the top of the route: a one-yard deviation throws off the passer’s timing.
- The bag on the ground stands in for the defender: get around it without widening.
- Have someone film you from above if you can; that’s the only angle where you can see the drift.
- In a group, with a ball: your partner throws to you as you come out of the break. Same movement, plus the catch.
Common mistakes
- Winning the release by widening two yards, which shifts the whole route.
- Reaching the top while decelerating from five yards out.
