Drop Step Turn

Run forward for ten yards, then open your hips in a single step and go the other way for five yards. It’s the turn of a comeback or any route that comes back: you cancel your speed and head back facing the ball without ever really stopping.

Key points

  • Your hips should turn before your shoulders. If your shoulders move first, you’ll lose a full step.
  • The opening happens on a single step, planted outside your body.
  • Your gaze moves first in the new direction; it leads everything else.
  • One minute between runs, three openings to each side.

Common mistakes

  • Coming to a full stop before turning, which throws away the whole benefit of the move.
  • Always opening to the same side: in a game, the defender decides the side.
