The 5-Yard Box
- Prescription
- 10 × duels · 45 s restabout 8 min
- Players
- 2 minimum
- Equipment
- Cones (recommended)
Four cones (or other markers: bottles, bags) mark out a 5-by-5-yard square. You’ve only won the one-on-one if you exit the square ahead of him, not if you cross the line: crossing the line while level with him accomplishes nothing.
Key points
- The reference point is the exit from the box, not crossing the line.
- Everything happens in the first five yards: beyond that, the release is over.
- Count the reps won and lost; the box makes the result easy to read.
Common mistakes
- Settling for having crossed the line while he’s still even with you.
- Taking the battle outside the box to get some room, which wrecks the route.
