Stem Drill

The whole stem shrunk to a three-meter lane, with a single mark on the ground. You take the first five steps of a route, stop, and walk back. The lie of the stem happens in those five steps, not in the distance: it’s the drill for a hallway, a gym, or in front of your house. Three sets of eight starts.
Key points
- The first three strides should be low and long, with the body leaning forward.
- The fourth step brings you up; the fifth is the one that can lie: that’s where you attack a side.
- Walk back, never jog: fatigue degrades your footwork and the drill stops training any of it.
Common mistakes
- Standing up from the second step, which announces the break before you’ve even left.
- Going on without rest until all your steps look alike.
