Sprint Build-Up

Prescription
4 × 40 yd · 180 s restabout 10 min
Players
Solo
Equipment
None

Four progressive sprints over 40 yards: 20 yards to build up speed, 20 yards at full speed. This is the necessary step to reach your top speed without going all out right away.

Key points

  • The build-up is steady, with no surges.
  • Three minutes of full recovery between each set. It’s a long time, but it’s necessary to ensure you still have speed on the fourth set.
  • Stop the set as soon as your time or form starts to decline: a tired sprint teaches you to run while tired.
  • Walk back; don't jog.

Common mistakes

  • Going all out from the very first yard, which prevents you from reaching your true top speed.
  • Shortening your recovery time because you feel good: that’s no longer about speed. It’s about conditioning.
